Getting Started
Do I need any experience to start?
+
None. The majority of our members started with zero martial arts experience. Our Adults Basics class at 7:30 PM is specifically designed for beginners, and every class is coached the entire time. You won't be thrown in and left to figure it out.
What should I wear to my first class?
+
Comfortable athletic clothing — shorts or joggers and a t-shirt. No zippers, no buttons, no jewelry. Once you sign up, your starter package includes a gi (the traditional uniform), rash guard, and belt.
How does the free trial work?
+
Pick a day, pick a class, and book online. Show up 10 minutes early, meet your coach, and join a full class with the team from warm-up to cool-down. After class, we'll answer any questions you have. No pressure, no obligation.
I'm out of shape. Is that okay?
+
More than okay. A large number of our adult members started training specifically to get in shape. Jiu-Jitsu is a full-body workout that builds strength, flexibility, and cardio over time. You train at your own pace from day one — no one expects you to keep up with a brown belt in your first week.
Which class should I start with?
+
For adults with no experience, start with the 7:30 PM Adults Basics class — it's built for beginners. The 12:00 PM Adults All Levels class is also great if your schedule works better during the day. For kids, we'll match your child to the right program based on their age: Tiny Champs (3–5), Little Champs (6–9), or Juniors (10–13).
Kids & Teens
Is Jiu-Jitsu safe for my child?
+
Yes. Safety is built into how we teach. Kids classes are fully supervised, every technique is taught in a controlled environment, and we spend significant time teaching children how to fall safely — a skill that protects them on and off the mat. BJJ is a grappling art, not a striking art, so there's no punching or kicking involved.
My child is 3 years old. Is that too young?
+
Not at all. Our Tiny Champs program is specifically designed for ages 3–5. At this age, the focus isn't technique — it's listening, following instructions, motor coordination, and learning to interact with other kids in a structured environment. Classes are 30 minutes, high-energy, and built around games and movement.
Will Jiu-Jitsu make my child aggressive?
+
The opposite. Children who train Jiu-Jitsu consistently become calmer and more confident because they have nothing to prove. They learn conflict resolution, self-control, and respect for others. They also learn that physical strength comes with responsibility. Our kids program emphasizes discipline and respect as core values in every single class.
Can I watch my child's class?
+
Absolutely. We have a viewing area where parents can watch every class. Many of our parents use that time to network with other families, get some work done, or — the one we like best — sign up for an adult class while their kid trains.
Pricing & Plans
How much does it cost?
+
Monthly memberships range from $149.99 to $199.99 depending on how many classes per week you want. Family plans save up to 20% per person. Your first month is a $275 starter package that includes your gi, rash guard, belt, and the full month of training. See the full breakdown on our pricing page.
Is there a contract?
+
No long-term contracts. Your membership is month-to-month. If you need to cancel, you can — we don't lock people in. We'd rather earn your membership every month than hold you to a piece of paper.
What's included in the $275 starter package?
+
Your first month of training on whichever plan you choose (2×, 3×, or Unlimited per week), a Gracie Barra gi (the uniform), a rash guard, and your white belt. The $275 is the same regardless of plan tier — the only difference is how many classes per week you get. It's everything you need to start — you walk in with nothing and leave fully equipped to train.
Do you offer family discounts?
+
Yes. When two or more family members train on the same plan tier, you save 10–20% per person depending on family size. A family of four on the Unlimited plan pays $639.99/month — that's $160 per person instead of $200. Use our family plan calculator to see exactly what your family would pay.
Training
What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi?
+
Gi classes use the traditional kimono (the gi), which allows for grips on the fabric — collar chokes, sleeve controls, and lapel guards. No-Gi classes are done in rash guards and shorts, with no fabric to grab, which makes the pace faster and more wrestling-based. Most of our members train both. We offer No-Gi every Wednesday at 7:30 PM.
How often should I train?
+
As often as your schedule allows. The more you train, the faster you progress — members who show up consistently see real results within weeks, not months. Most of our members train on the Unlimited plan so they can come to any class, any day, without thinking about it. That flexibility is what makes the habit stick.
Will I get hurt?
+
Jiu-Jitsu is a contact sport, so minor soreness and occasional bumps are normal — similar to any physical activity. Serious injuries are rare, especially at the beginner level where training is controlled and coached. We emphasize tapping early (the universal signal to stop), and every training partner respects that immediately. Safety is a culture here, not just a policy.
Do you offer private lessons?
+
Yes. Private lessons are available with our instructors and are the fastest way to accelerate your progress. They're especially useful for competition preparation or working on specific areas of your game. Contact us directly to schedule — call (407) 864-7747 or email info@graciebarrahunterscreek.com.
